Revision as of 19:46, 11 January 2010

Mapping Tutorials are being made and added to this wiki for Killing Floor. Any chance you can make some sort of link or table of contents for the main page?

Yo guys, we need pull this thing together and make it more legible. I think we need to make a table of contents for the main page, I think updates needs to show the latest update to keep the list from getting too long, and I'm going to add a list of the "survivors". We also need to talk about a model for Mods and how to incorporate them into the wiki. Maybe have an official map section and a Modder's map section? --Myoga 02:56, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

If we do have a table of contents for EVERYTHING, the front page would be extremely crowded, messy and overflowing with text. Unless someone can make a proper "Table" of contents like the tf2 wiki and l4d wiki. I was also planning on putting only 2 updates per time on the main page but nevermind that. --Takua 18:48, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

I kinda think the L4D wiki frontpage is bad. It has things I would never use crowding all over it. The featured article, video, poll, and image seem like useless junk. Everything else is good though. I think we should have a Contents part and have a link to a TODO list. Also I am a complete wiki newb and can't make templates but if some pages can be set up for the specimens, I can start adding away to them. Also how would we get exact damage stats from the specimen? --Myoga 10:23, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

I think a poll and a to-do list would be a good addition. The only problem is, not alot of people are contributing to this wiki and I too am new at wikis. Also, the upload feature has been disabled, and I don't know how to enable it. Until someone can get it to be enabled we can't upload any sort of picture. --Takua 18:48, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Oh look, uploads enabled, thanks J03.

Hey guys, I would like to know how to add that (redirected from *insert page name here*) thing. There's an example at http://kf-wiki.com/wiki/Perk below the main title. --Takua

Headline text

I'm not sure, but I think you just need to make a page (in the example 'Perk') and write '#redirect Perks' in it (without the apostrophes). Then it will automatically say '(Redirected from Perk)' on the 'Perks'-page. --Random Guy 22:42, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Navigation

 • I'm not sure what you're talking about but I'll try. I'm new to wiki-writing, so I may be wrong though. Templates are just something to redirect a long code to a template nick-named (eg. Example1) by the writer, making it more organised when editing one page.

eg: (Taken from BetaHome)

<div style="float: left; width: 79.5%;"> {| style="text-align:center; width: 100%; border:1px solid maroon; margin-bottom: 5px;" |- | style="font-size:125%; font-weight: bold; background-color: #C11B17;" colspan="9" | <span style="color: #2B1B17;">Specimens</span> |- |File:Clotthumb.jpg |Bloatthumb.jpg |Crawlerthumb.jpg |Gorefastthumb.jpg |Stalkerthumb.jpg |Sirenthumb.jpg |Scrakethumb.jpg |Fleshpoundthumb.jpg |Patriarchthumb.jpg |- !Clot !Bloat !Crawler !Gorefast !Stalker !Siren !Scrake !Fleshpound !Patriarch | </div>

Can be shortened if put in the template Specimens. So when editing that particular page. You will only see Specimens in it and will be less eye-blinding than looking at a whole wall of text. To edit the template, basically edit the page that is using that particular template scroll to the bottom and there will be: Templates used in this page: Template:example1 (edit) Obviously click the edit button to edit. Try looking at the BetaHome edit-page if you're still not so clear about it.--Takua 17:57, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

 • Yeah, Templates are good for using the same information on several pages. I think you saw the Gametext-template I did. Do feel free to change that one too if you find anything that could be better (I'm also kind of new to wiki-writing). I was wondering more specifically about the navbox kind, but I see that you've done one of those already. I was thinking about something like the Specimens-template you did, maybe without the pictures, at the bottom of each page (clot, bloat and so on) to ease navigation. Good work on them :-) --Random Guy 22:29, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
 • Cool use of the templates, and I see you took my div's and tables :O --Takua 05:43, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
 • Yeah, thanks for the original work :-) Now I was thinking about something like this for the Specimens, but the Template:Specimens is already taken. I think pictures on the main page is good, but not on their respective pages. Not sure though...
Specimens
Clot - Bloat - Crawler - Gorefast - Stalker - Siren - Scrake - Fleshpound - Patriarch
--Random Guy 12:51, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

I guess that table is fine, but if we can somehow categorize each Specimen, the table will look more "complete" but I don't suppose it's possible to categorize them. Oh wells! That will do. --Takua 13:49, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

Pictures

I need some small thumbnail-like pics for the new main-page (BetaHome). Once that's done I'll just get every table up and we can use a more organised main page. :] --Takua 05:46, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

Features article?

I see most of the game-wikis have featured articles and all that crap. Soooo, do we need it? But in my opinion, I don't think so. --Takua 09:04, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Storyline

Hey guys! Haven't been on in a while but this place has grown beautifully! My only question is where the specimen descriptions are coming from? Like Kevin and his 17 year old son on the Clot page. --Myoga 20:51, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm not really sure but some guy called User:ZeRo_InSaNiTy is the person who has written all the backgrounds of nearly each specimen and even the Patriarch himself. He says he has been playing since v1.0 in the mod version, so I guess we got reason to believe what he's writing is true. --Takua 09:45, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

Red link

According to the wanted pages there's still a link "Squad Members" somewhere around and I can't find it. :| --Takua 06:26, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

Navigation & tabs out of place only on the main page?

Does it seem that way? or is it just my browser screwing up again... Anyway, it seems that it only happens here on the main page, nowhere else. --Takua 13:57, 12 December 2009 (UTC)

Its an error in the pages content. Notice how the bug doesn't effect old revisions of the page? Its most likely just an unclosed HTML tag in one of the templates. Balthazar 03:42, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
You're right it is just an unclosed tag. Now it's fixed. :D --Takua 05:10, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

Image file formats

Why is SVG not a supported file format? Balthazar 16:57, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

You can always request the owner to do so by adding a comment on his steam profile or the wiki steam group. He's not on very often and hasn't touched the wiki in months but he does go on in steam once in awhile so I guess adding comments or adding him as a steam friend to send him messages would be your best bet. --Takua 12:03, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
I've commented on J03's steam page asking about SVG support as well as parser function support, which would fix the copy-pasted-from-the-halo-wiki gunbox template and allow me to do more interesting things with the weapon info template, like auto-hide fields with the value 0 and such. -- Balthazar 02:43, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
.SVG files can now be uploaded! --Takua 17:02, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
ParserFunctions extension has now been installed too. Thanks guys, you're doing a great job with this wiki! --J03 17:07, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

Small articles

I think it would be worth merging several smaller articles like multiplayer, iron-sights, ZED-time, DRF and such, articles which could be summed up adequately in a small paragraph, into a glossary article for quick reference. I also think it would suit the character articles to have them all merged into their individual packs, since I doubt any of them are going to get much bigger than a picture and their biography. What are other peoples thoughts on this? -- Balthazar 23:48, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

A glossary article where we put these little articles in? Will the glossary article name be "Glossary"? :O But I do agree that we should just merge the character articles and put em' inside their packs. --Takua 07:48, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
Unless someone can think of a better and more relevant title for a glossary, yes. Killing Floor Wiki:Glossary maybe? Unless of course there is a reason to avoid that namespace.[1]
I've merged the playable character articles, in the course of which I formed the following points which are either small things that I cant do myself due to protections or big things that I wouldn't want to do without consensus:
 • The oddly-protected Template:HumanCharacters needs, aside from possibly being redesigned to accommodate its 20 links to 6 page, its width atrib changing to max-width, clear:both; to be added and then, less importantly between the noincludes: and . Actually, the same for most navigation templates.
 • The Pvt. Jim article seems entirely made up of speculation stemming from a nondescript name on the texture of the combat armour. It seems more like the kind of thing that should get a very brief mention in a trivia section of the combat armour page than have an entire article dedicated to 'him'. I feel a similar way about the helicopter pilots but at least that one is based on some form of facts.
 • There may need to be a big cleanup of unused images to prevent getting a huge backlog of them.
 • The Template:WeaponCost has its category tag outside of its noincludes, which is only really an issue on the combat armour page. It and Template:AmmoCost would also fit well into the Category:Formatting templates.
 • Maintaining the completed and, to a lesser extent, cancelled sections of the ToDo list will eventually make the list excessively bloated, while I can see the purpose of maintaining the cancelled list (as a deterrent to their reappearance on the list) the completed list seems to just be in competition with the history section of the relevant article, except lacking in direct name and date stamps.
 • FN SCAR should possibly be renamed to reflect its name in the game (SCARMK17) and to avoid confusing players who may not be aware of the manufacturer Fabrique Nationale de Herstal or their part in the creation of the original weapon. Similar point for the M32 MGL and the M79, which are referred to ingame as M## Grenade Launcher(s).
 • The Template:Irrelevant should be merged with Template:Deletion, having two templates for what is effectively the same purpose on a wiki where there is at most 3 people who would use them and even less articles to use them on seems pointless. It would also be easier to have the input section be {} instead of a named section (or {{{Reason|{}}}} for the sake of backwards compatibility) so that the template code in use would only have to be Irrelevant vandalism.
 • Template:Stub should have <includeonly></includeonly> added to it to remove the necessity to have both stub and category:stubs in articles together, or remove the category:stubs altogether and use the template as a self reference (Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Stub) instead of needing an extra management category to do the same task.
...I think that just about covers everything I've found so far. I may have missed nowiki tags on parts of that, but I think I got them all and in hindsight its not as tall an order as it seemed to me while I was writing it. -- Balthazar 21:18, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
Done all of them, cept' cleaning up the overload of unused images and the trivia thing which I will discuss about.

Okay, about the trivia section on an article. Lets say we added that section to the Combat armour page, doesn't that mean we would have to add some sort of trivia on the other pages? It would be a little strange to see some trivia on a page and see that no other article in the wiki has trivia. --Takua 17:26, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

My personal opinion with trivia sections is that they tend to lead to too much pointless spam, a can of worms waiting to happen. Which is why I placed the line regarding Pvt Jim at the end of the lead section of the combat armour page. Balthazar 17:56, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
So you're implying that we should just leave out the trivia section and put the "Pvt. Jim" part at the end of the lead section. Which I guess, is already done. --Takua 01:58, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

Clips and Magazines

http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/7691/1262748648147copy.jpg there isn't a single weapon in the game that uses clips, if that could be reflected in the wiki it would be awesome.

I take that as an indirect "Fix the false info as no weapons uses clips in the game". Would be great if you'd actually help to clear instead of just posting it in a talk page. :\ --Takua 10:01, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

I'll give it a shot I guess.

"Mapping" as a namespace

I've been looking into creating "Mapping" and "Mapping talk" as proper namespaces.link According to MediaWiki; in order to get the pseudo-namespace "Mapping:" articles into a proper namespace called "Mapping" they would first need to be moved to something other than "Mapping:", the "Mapping:" namespace to be created properly (as detailed in the above link), and then the articles to be moved back into the namespace. Otherwise they would all become inaccessible due to the way the mediawiki software handles namespaces. In other words; by moving the mapping related articles to "Mapping:" before creating the namespace we've shot ourselves in the foot for the purposes of doing it properly.

Unrelated notes:

-- Balthazar 21:55, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

An extra note: it might be worth moving "Mapping:" pages into the help namespace instead of giving them a dedicated namespace, since thats effectively what they are; help pages about mapping. — Balthazar (T|C) 22:24, 10 January 2010 (UTC)
Done the manual of style thing.
I think the new weapon nav box is a little messy due to the empty spaces here and there which makes it slightly confusing. If we can sort it out to make all the empty spaces at the bottom of each column, that would be great! And one more small suggestion to make the navbox look more "complete" is to add the black perk icons beside every respective perk name. That would be nice too, to me at least. One last thing, the weapon damage table is also missing from it, or maybe you have some plan to put the damage to their respective pages. Maybe we could put up the new table in for a bit and see how it fits.
About the "Mapping:" namespace. I guess we have no choice but to move it to the "Help:" namespace. I'll get that done with sooner or later since I'm getting tons of homework from school. --Takua 09:51, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
The weapon nav thing was more of a way of representing an idea in weapon categorisation in as little code as was possible than anything else and certainly isn't what I would call complete. As a finished navbox it would look closer to how the current one does now. I do have a plan to include all the extended weapon details in their articles, but those plans aren't close to fruition yet. I also want to avoid the temptation to put too much info in the infoboxes, which can easily end up with them ending up longer than the articles that they represent. I'm also working on a sort of master-template for the infoboxes.
Also, due to the fact that I've been awake for nearly 24 hours I've lost track of where I was going with this...
...I'm going to go lie down. — Balthazar (T|C) 12:21, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
