The Siren

"The Siren is a real screamer. Very nasty. Her screams actually hurt - and they'll destroy grenades and rockets in mid-air!"

The Siren is one of the few specimens with a ranged attack, the others being the Husk, the Patriarch, and to a small extent the Bloat. Their scream, which gives off a visible red disturbance field, is particularly dangerous; it causes large area of effect amounts of damage, ignores a player's armour, destroys explosives, and causes disorientation which can make killing her at short range troublesome and even dangerous. The earliest they can be found on a long game is the third wave.

They have a tendency to hide behind other specimens as they approach which can sometimes make them hard to spot before they get in range. When they are spotted they should be treated as a priority target and taken out as soon as possible, a task which can often fall to a Sharpshooter to do.

When not screaming, a Siren can be heard to be complaining in an innocent sounding voice, possibly a reference to Sirens of legend which use their voices to lure in targets. However in Killing Floor it serves as an audio cue to alert the players to her existence and to aid in the location of her.

Biology

Appearance

The Siren is one of only three females on the game, the others being the Stalker and the Trader. They appear as short, malnourished, distressed looking individuals wearing only a series of thick leather straps which are primarily used to bind their arms to their body. Their eyes, and the areas around them, are completely black and dripping with blood and their mouths are nearly always open, with their teeth visibly on show.

Behaviour

Sirens have no special behaviour patterns. They walk at a steady pace towards the players, usually amongst other specimens, and when then get within range they stop and scream. If a player manages to get close enough to one before it scream she will usually attempt to bite the player, which can actually do quite a bit of damage, but unlike their scream this doesn't cause any other detrimental effects and only effects one player.

Historic data

This section is related to the Siren as it appeared in the Killing Floor mod.

One of the biggest gameplay differences involving the Siren in the mod has to do with her scream; it didn't let off a visible disturbance field as it does now, meaning that unprepared players could often fail to locate and dispatch her before suffering serious losses. Her physical appearance was quite similar however, despite a some quite different features; her hair was relatively tidy, about shoulder length with a red tinge. She also wore a straight jacket instead of a system of straps.

Background

Like the Clot, a clone of one of Clamely's family, specifically his wife. His wife had long wanted to be a singer, but wasn't really that good, so he designed the Siren to be a sonic weapon. Their eyes were gouged out so that they could not see (thus, know when to scream), and they were all restrained with straight jackets. Kevin Clamely had a Siren kill his wife when she attempted to divorce him.

Extermination

An important thing to note with a Siren's scream is that it requires line of sight through the level to cause damage, it can cause damage from behind players and other specimens but not around corners or behind doors and walls. This is a particularly useful piece of information if ever the need to dispatch them at short range arises, a position that Berserkers are likely to find themselves in.

Sirens don't have a particularly large amount of health, similar to that of the Gorefast, however they aren't as susceptible to decapitation as Gorefasts; making them harder to kill with less powerful weapons. Weapons such as the Crossbow or M14 EBR are particularly effective at ranged decapitation of Sirens, other weapons with long effective ranges are also useful for taking them out. Weapons with projectiles that get destroyed by the screams such as grenade and rocket launchers (M79, M32 and L.A.W) can also be effective at taking Sirens out before they get close enough to scream, despite not always being a cost-effective strategy for dealing with them.
